Nehemiah Dixon III

Nehemiah Dixon, III, holds the esteemed position of Senior Director of Programs and Community Engagement at The Phillips Collection, America’s first modern art museum located in Washington, DC. In this capacity, he spearheads a robust and innovative community engagement plan, overseeing the development and delivery of public programs, exhibitions, and commissions at the Museum and The Phillips Collection’s satellite location (Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus, also known as THEARC). He coordinates community engagement activities across DC by partnering with organizations such as the DC Public Library, The Nicholson Project, TASSC International. Washington Sculptors Group and other local arts organizations and artists. Nehemiah's collaborative efforts with his colleagues in curatorial, digital, and design staff have led to the successful implementation of exhibitions, public programs, symposia, and workshops at the museum, online, and at the museum’s satellite location in Washington DC’s eighth ward.  He is also responsible for overseeing the Head of Public Programs, the Head of Experiential Learning, and the Manager of Community Projects.

Mr. Dixon, a native of Washington, DC, is a Senior Director and a member of Red Dirt Studio in Mt Rainier, MD. He is an accomplished artist focusing on historical and contemporary social justice issues. Currently, he is collaborating with the Neighborhood Design Center and the towns of North Brentwood and Brentwood in Prince George’s County, Maryland, to transform a segregation-era barrier between the two towns into a memorial sculpture and park. His design features a sculpture of two hands lifting the barrier in the air, symbolizing the freedom of the two towns to walk beneath it.  He actively engages with the local community and governments to ensure that the monument he erects incorporates insights from all interested community stakeholders.

Prior to his current role, Nehemiah has held several key positions in the DC arts community, each contributing to his wealth of experience and expertise. He served as the CEO/ President of Nonstop Art, where he established a maker space for the residents of Ward 8, and as an instructor at the Corcoran School of Art at George Washington University. His previous roles also included managing director at Art Works Now, Gateway CDC board member, visual arts coordinator at Joe’s Movement Emporium, and even museum assistant at The Phillips Collection, where his journey in the arts community began.

Nehemiah received a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Maryland Institute College of Art.
